Welcome back, Mahabharata enthusiasts! 📜
Get ready for Chapter 3 of our Mahabharata series! Before we meet the fabulous 5 Pandavas, let's uncover the incredible story of their mom, Kunti! Last week, King Pandu's hunt changed everything. Now, Kunti's saga takes centre stage! Buckle up for sacrifice, devotion, and divine twists!
Originally named Pritha (पृथा), Kunti was the sister of Lord Krishna's father, Vasudev, and the daughter of Yadav King- Surasena (राजा सुरसेन). When she was adopted by her uncle Kuntibhoj (कुंतीभोज), who was childless, and given the new name Kunti (कुंती), her life took an unexpected turn. As a child, Kunti developed into a devout and religious individual.
An important turning point in Kunti's life came when her father welcomed the legendary Rishi Durvasa (ऋषि दुर्वासा), who was known for having short-lived tempers. Lord Indra, Goddess Saraswati, Krishna's wife Rukmini, and even his wife were on Durvasa's list of people who were cursed. But Rishi Durvasa was charmed by Kunti's devotion and care, and he gave her a priceless gift: a mantra that could be used to call upon any god and have a child.
Kunti's curiosity overcame her, and she said the mantra to call forth Surya, the Sun deity. She was gifted by Surya with a child, Karna (कर्ण), who was born wearing earrings and holy armour. Fearing social condemnation, Kunti concealed Karna's birth and left him floating in the river Ganga (गंगा नदी).
Unaware of the difficulties that would arise, Kunti married King Pandu of Hastinapur years later. As we previously discussed, Pandu's curse kept him from becoming a father. Unexpected connections between Kunti's history and present were about to become clear.
The tale of Kunti is a moving reminder of both the strength of faith and the complexity of human nature. Her supernatural blessing and the events that followed shaped her future and her family. Next week, we'll look at the amazing story of the Pandavas' birth, where Kunti's mantra is essential.
